Educational programs for grades 5-9 of special (correctional) educational schools of type VIII (for children with intellectual disabilities) determine the content of subjects and remedial courses, the sequence of its completion by year of study.
In general education subjects, programs are presented on:
- Russian language: reading and speech development, grammar, spelling and speech development;
- natural history;
- mathematics;
- natural science (biology): inanimate nature, plants, humans;
- geography: an initial course in physical geography, the nature of our Motherland, the geography of continents and oceans, the geography of Russia, the geography of our area, elementary astronomy;
- Russian history and social science;
- social and everyday orientation;
- singing and music;
- physical education.
The correctional block is represented by a program for social and domestic orientation (SBO).
Correctional and group classes are conducted according to individual plans.
The programs take into account the characteristics of the cognitive activity of children with intellectual disabilities. They are aimed at the diversified development of students’ personality, promote their mental development, and provide civic, moral, labor, aesthetic and physical education. The programs contain material that helps students achieve the level of general educational knowledge and skills that they need for social adaptation.

The main subject of activity of correctional schools of the VIII type is the implementation of state educational programs for students with intellectual disabilities. In organizing the educational process, Special Correctional Schools of Type VIII are guided by the “Programs of Special (Correctional) Educational Institutions of Type VIII, edited by Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences V.V. Voronkova, which are approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.

Curricula determine the content of education in subjects and the sequence of its completion by years of study. The programs of the Special Correctional School take into account the characteristics of the cognitive activity of students with intellectual disabilities and the level of speech development. They are aimed at the comprehensive development of students’ personality, promote their mental development, and provide civic, moral, labor, aesthetic and physical education. The programs contain material that helps students achieve the level of general educational knowledge, skills and abilities that they need for social adaptation.

In the programs, the principle of correctional training is the leading one. They specify ways and means of correcting deficiencies in general, speech, physical development and moral education of mentally retarded children in the process of mastering each academic subject. Particular attention is paid to the correction of specific disorders existing in individual students, to the correction of the entire personality as a whole.

Teaching mentally retarded students is educational in nature. The abnormal condition of the child makes it difficult to solve the problems of education, but does not remove them. When selecting program educational material, the need to develop such character traits and the entire personality as a whole was taken into account that will help graduates become useful members of society.

The fact is that today two types of officially approved programs are being implemented in the education of mentally retarded children. These are programs for special (correctional) educational institutions of the VIII type I.M. Bgazhnokova and programsfor special (correctional) educational institutions of the VIII type by V. V. Voronkova.

ProgramsV.V. Voronkova is “older”, textbooks for them were developed a long time ago, are regularly republished, modified, corrected and supplemented.

ProgramsTHEM. Bgazhnokova is “younger”, more modern, more aimed at developing communicative abilities and socialization of students, which reflects the requirements of modern reality.

A regional basic curriculum has been drawn up for them, which does not provide for the opportunity for teachers to choose V.V. The formulation of lesson topics and the selection of educational material rests entirely with the teacher. Due to the discrepancy between the textbooks and the implemented program, this poses a serious difficulty for the teacher, but also provides him with a certain freedom for creative search and self-realization.

The lesson topic of I.M. Bgazhnokova’s educational teaching line when studying a noun includes 25 topics, and therefore is designed for 25 hours of teaching time.

The program allocates 72 hours for studying morphology in grade 7. Noun, adjective, verb and pronoun are studied. There are 17 topics for an adjective, 19 topics for a verb, and 10 for a pronoun. Much attention in textbooks is paid to the speech development of mentally retarded schoolchildren. I consider it especially important to work on the meaning of a word, its polysemy, its use in a figurative meaning, and its introduction into the child’s active vocabulary, because these aspects are very difficult for persons with intellectual disabilities to perceive. The authors of the textbook assign separate topics for working on the word. For example, “Using nouns to compare one thing to another,” “Using adjectives to compare things,” “Using verbs to compare things.”

Dictionary words are introduced with a mandatory interpretation of the meaning of the word and, as a rule, fit into the internal logic of the lesson, appearing repeatedly in other exercises on the topic.

Work with text is structured in a special way. It involves not only working on the content of the text, but also correcting deformed text (the order of sentences is broken, sentence boundaries are missing, the order of parts of the text has been changed), or creative work to supplement it, complete it, distribute sentences, introduce dialogues, etc. ZAssignments to the text are aimed at developing the skills to generalize, establish analogies, classify, build logical reasoning, inference, etc.).All this allows students to more fully and accurately understand the meaning of the text and forms cognitive and communicative learning tools.

Textbooks for correctional schools were not initially focused on the Federal State Educational Standard, becausespecial Federal state educational standards are currently under development (this work is planned to be completed in December 2014). Therefore, I consider it incorrect to evaluate them for full compliance with the requirements of the standards. However, we should not forget that correctional and developmental education is fundamentally focused on an activity-based approach. It is laid down both in the textbooks of V.V. Voronkova and in the textbooks of I.M. Bgazhnokova.

The presentation of new material is presented in the form of splash articles or linguistic fairy tales (stories) that motivate the student to engage in dialogue and reasoning. Textbooks do not give ready-made rules. They are formulated by students independently, in a free presentation, based on examples and imply an understanding of the topic (concept), and not its memorization.

Thus, the teaching and learning complex “Russian Language” is aimed at developing independent thinking of mentally retarded schoolchildren, abilities to generalization, processing and application of acquired knowledge in written speech, as well as the formationthe communicative function of speech and the ability to express thoughts in detail and more accurately understand other people. The structure and methodological apparatus of textbooks make it possible to use elements of activity technology in the classroom.
