A world without numbers...Is it possible? In modern life, we use numbers without even thinking about it. We go to the store, look at the clock, dial the phone number. Without numbers, no scientific discovery is possible. One mistake in the calculations and the spacecraft simply won’t take off. It is no coincidence that the discovery of numbers is one of the most ingenious manifestations of the human mind.

Modern man is surrounded by numbers everywhere: date of birth, phone numbers, documents, barcodes, digital technology from cameras to spaceships and much more. This cannot but influence our lives.

But despite technological progress, despite the fact that “everything is digital,” we are still subject to numerical superstitions. Many signs are associated with numbers. Many teachings and spiritual traditions have dealt with the problem of number. But each of the traditions saw in numbers either a manifestation of Divine powers, or levels and aspects of nature, or a symbol of the deep structure of man.

The topic “Number around us” attracted us and we decided to trace how the concept of number changed, what types appeared, what superstitions are associated with certain numbers. And consider the modern approach to numbers - touch on the science of numerology and show two types of research into a person’s character and the influence of numbers on his destiny.

We combined theory with practice in our work. Firstly, using the examples of personalities known to us, we applied the obtained facts, and secondly, we conducted a survey among teachers, classmates and parents about the influence of numbers on a person’s character.

To choose the topic of our project, we found many statements by famous mathematicians about number, but the most suitable were the words of Pythagoras “Everything is a number. Numbers rule the world." Only in our topic these words appear with a question mark “Numbers rule the world.” We tried to find an answer to this question in our work.

3. HISTORY OF NUMBER DEVELOPMENT.

The word "mathematics" originated in ancient Greece around the 5th century BC. It comes from the word “mathema” - “teaching”, “knowledge gained through reflection”.

The ancient Greeks knew four "mathemas":

  2. music theory (harmony);
  3. the study of figures and measurements (geometry);
  4. astronomy and astrology.

There were two directions in ancient Greek science. Representatives of the first of them, led by Pythagoras, considered knowledge intended only for initiates. No one had the right to share their discoveries with outsiders. Representatives of the second direction, on the contrary, believed that mathematics is accessible to everyone who is capable of productive thinking. They called themselves mathematicians. The second direction won.

People have learned to count since time immemorial. At first they distinguished simply one or many objects. Hundreds of years passed before the number 2 appeared. Counting in pairs turned out to be very convenient, and it is no coincidence that some tribes of Australia and Polynesia until recently had only two numerals: one and two, and all numbers greater than two were named as a combination of these two numerals . For example, three - “one, two”; four - “two, two”; five - “two, two, one.” Later, special names for numbers appeared. First for small numbers, and then for larger and larger ones. Number is one of the basic concepts of mathematics, allowing one to express the results of counting or measurement. We always have our fingers with us, so we started counting on our fingers. Thus, the most ancient and simple “counting machine” has long been the fingers and toes.

It was difficult to memorize large numbers, and therefore other “devices” were “involved” in addition to the fingers and toes. For example, the Peruvians used multi-colored laces with knots tied on them for this purpose. Rope abacus with knots were in use in Russia, as well as in many European countries. People still sometimes tie knots on handkerchiefs as a keepsake.

Serifs on sticks were used in trade transactions. After completing the payments, the sticks were broken in half, one half was taken by the creditor, and the other by the debtor. The half played the role of a “receipt”. In the villages they used abacus in the form of notches on sticks.

At a higher stage of development, people began to use different objects when counting: they used pebbles, grains, and a rope with tags. These were the first calculating instruments, which ultimately led to the formation of different number systems and to the creation of modern high-speed electronic computers.

Numbers are symbols for designating numbers. The first records of numbers can be considered notches on wooden tags or bones, and later - dashes. But it is inconvenient to depict large numbers in this way, so they began to use special signs (numbers).

The ancient Sumerians were the first to come up with the idea of ​​writing numbers. They only used two numbers. A vertical line meant one unit, and an angle of two lying lines meant ten. The Greek Pythagoras, who was born on the island of Samos, was the first to talk about numbers. Many legends have been created about this man. Some of his disciples claimed that he was the son of the god Apollo, that his thigh was made of pure gold, and when he approached a certain river, the river overflowed its banks to greet Pythagoras.

The fact that numbers can be even and odd has been known for a very long time. After all, mathematics is a science that arose due to the practical needs of man. A market trader, laying out goods on the counter in pairs, sometimes had an apple, bread or an ax left over. But Pythagoras began studying the properties of even and odd numbers. When he added two even numbers, he got an even number; when he added two odd numbers, he also got an even number. When adding even and odd numbers, you get an odd number. At first Pythagoras failed to explain this. But then he came up with a unique way of proving general statements about numbers: he began to denote numbers with dots.

The pictures turned out to be of two types - the first had a middle point, the numbers began to be called odd; the second ones did not have such a point (odd). And Pythagoras depicted the products of numbers in the form of rectangles, proving that the product of an even and an odd number is even; odd numbers – odd; even numbers – even, based on the existence of the midpoint of the product.
