INTRODUCTION

A world without numbers...Is it possible? In modern life, we use numbers without even thinking about it. We go to the store, look at the clock, dial the phone number. Without numbers, no scientific discovery is possible. One mistake in the calculations and the spacecraft simply won’t take off. It is no coincidence that the discovery of numbers is one of the most ingenious manifestations of the human mind.

Modern man is surrounded by numbers everywhere: date of birth, phone numbers, documents, barcodes, digital technology from cameras to spaceships and much more. This cannot but influence our lives.

But despite technological progress, despite the fact that “everything is digital,” we are still subject to numerical superstitions. Many signs are associated with numbers. Many teachings and spiritual traditions have dealt with the problem of number. But each of the traditions saw in numbers either a manifestation of Divine powers, or levels and aspects of nature, or a symbol of the deep structure of man.

The topic “Number around us” attracted us and we decided to trace how the concept of number changed, what types appeared, what superstitions are associated with certain numbers. And consider the modern approach to numbers - touch on the science of numerology and show two types of research into a person’s character and the influence of numbers on his destiny.

We combined theory with practice in our work. Firstly, using the examples of personalities known to us, we applied the obtained facts, and secondly, we conducted a survey among teachers, classmates and parents about the influence of numbers on a person’s character.

To choose the topic of our project, we found many statements by famous mathematicians about number, but the most suitable were the words of Pythagoras “Everything is a number. Numbers rule the world." Only in our topic these words appear with a question mark “Numbers rule the world.” We tried to find an answer to this question in our work.

3. HISTORY OF NUMBER DEVELOPMENT.

The word "mathematics" originated in ancient Greece around the 5th century BC. It comes from the word “mathema” - “teaching”, “knowledge gained through reflection”.

The ancient Greeks knew four "mathemas":

the study of numbers (arithmetic);
music theory (harmony);
the study of figures and measurements (geometry);
astronomy and astrology.

There were two directions in ancient Greek science. Representatives of the first of them, led by Pythagoras, considered knowledge intended only for initiates. No one had the right to share their discoveries with outsiders. Representatives of the second direction, on the contrary, believed that mathematics is accessible to everyone who is capable of productive thinking. They called themselves mathematicians. The second direction won.

People have learned to count since time immemorial. At first they distinguished simply one or many objects. Hundreds of years passed before the number 2 appeared. Counting in pairs turned out to be very convenient, and it is no coincidence that some tribes of Australia and Polynesia until recently had only two numerals: one and two, and all numbers greater than two were named as a combination of these two numerals . For example, three - “one, two”; four - “two, two”; five - “two, two, one.” Later, special names for numbers appeared. First for small numbers, and then for larger and larger ones. Number is one of the basic concepts of mathematics, allowing one to express the results of counting or measurement. We always have our fingers with us, so we started counting on our fingers. Thus, the most ancient and simple “counting machine” has long been the fingers and toes.

It was difficult to memorize large numbers, and therefore other “devices” were “involved” in addition to the fingers and toes. For example, the Peruvians used multi-colored laces with knots tied on them for this purpose. Rope abacus with knots were in use in Russia, as well as in many European countries. People still sometimes tie knots on handkerchiefs as a keepsake.

Serifs on sticks were used in trade transactions. After completing the payments, the sticks were broken in half, one half was taken by the creditor, and the other by the debtor. The half played the role of a “receipt”. In the villages they used abacus in the form of notches on sticks.

At a higher stage of development, people began to use different objects when counting: they used pebbles, grains, and a rope with tags. These were the first calculating instruments, which ultimately led to the formation of different number systems and to the creation of modern high-speed electronic computers.

Numbers are symbols for designating numbers. The first records of numbers can be considered notches on wooden tags or bones, and later - dashes. But it is inconvenient to depict large numbers in this way, so they began to use special signs (numbers).

The ancient Sumerians were the first to come up with the idea of writing numbers. They only used two numbers. A vertical line meant one unit, and an angle of two lying lines meant ten. They made these lines in the form of wedges, because they wrote with a sharp stick on damp clay tablets, which were then dried and fired. This is what the planks looked like.

After counting by notches, people invented special symbols called numbers. They began to be used to designate different quantities of any objects. Different civilizations created their own numbers.

For example, in ancient Egyptian numbering, which originated more than 5,000 years ago, there were special signs (hieroglyphs) for writing the numbers 1, 10, 100, 1000.

Numbers were designated in a similar way on the island of Crete, located in the Mediterranean Sea. In Cretan writing, units were denoted by a vertical line |, tens by a horizontal line - , hundreds by a circle ◦, thousands by a sign ¤.

Peoples (Babylonians, Assyrians, Sumerians) who lived in the area between the Tigris and Euphrates in the period from the 2nd millennium BC. before the beginning of our era, numbers were first designated using circles and semicircles of various sizes, but then only two cuneiform signs began to be used - a straight wedge (1) and a lying wedge (10). At the beginning of our era, the Mayan Indians, who lived on the Yucatan Peninsula in Central America, used a different number system - base-20. They denoted 1 with a dot, and 5 with a horizontal line, for example, the entry ‗‗‗‗‗‗ meant 14. The Mayan number system also had a sign for zero. In its shape it resembled a half-closed eye.

In Ancient Greece, the numbers 5, 10, 100, 1000, 10000 were first denoted by the letters G, N, X, M, and the number 1 by a dash /. These signs were used to make up the designations r r r Г (35), etc. Late numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000, 8000, 9000, 10000, 20000 began to be denoted by letters of the Greek alphabet, to which three more obsolete letters had to be added. However, India was cut off from other countries - thousands of kilometers of distance and high mountains lay in the way. The Arabs were the first "outsiders" to borrow numbers from the Indians and bring them to Europe. A little later, the Arabs simplified these icons, they began to look like this:

They are similar to many of our numbers. The word “digit” was also inherited from the Arabs. The Arabs called zero, or “empty,” “sifra.” Since then, the word “digital” appeared. True, now all ten icons for recording the numbers that we use are called numbers: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.

Roman numbering is based on the principles of addition (for example, VI = V + I) and subtraction (for example, IX = X -1). The Roman numbering system is decimal, but non-positional. Roman numerals do not come from letters. Initially, they were designated, like many peoples, with “sticks” (I - one, X - 10 - a crossed out stick, V - 5 - half of ten, one hundred - a circle with a dash inside, fifty - half of this sign, etc. ).

History says that the prototypes of modern Arabic numerals appeared in India no later than the 5th century. But Indian figures in the X-XIII centuries. came to Europe thanks to the Arabs, hence the name “Arab”. Much credit for the spread and emergence of Indian numerals in the Arab world belonged to the works of two mathematicians: the Central Asian scientist Khorezmi (c. 780-c. 850) and the Arab Kindi (c. 800-c. 870).

Khorezmi, who lived in Baghdad, wrote an arithmetic treatise on Indian numerals, which became famous in Europe in the translation of the Italian mathematician Leonardo of Pisa (Fibonacci). Fibonacci's text played a decisive role in the fact that the Arab-Indian system of notation of numbers took root in the West. In this system, the value of a digit depends on its position in the record (for example, in the number 151, the digit 1 on the left has the value 100, and on the right - 1). And the Arabic name for zero - sifr - became the word “digit”. Arabic numerals became widespread in Europe from the second half of the 15th century.

Arabic numbers in Russia began to be used mainly in the 18th century. Before that, our ancestors used Slavic numbering. Titles (dashes) were placed above the letters, and then the letters denoted numbers.

4.TYPES OF NUMBERS.

The Greek Pythagoras, who was born on the island of Samos, was the first to talk about numbers. Many legends have been created about this man. Some of his disciples claimed that he was the son of the god Apollo, that his thigh was made of pure gold, and when he approached a certain river, the river overflowed its banks to greet Pythagoras.

The fact that numbers can be even and odd has been known for a very long time. After all, mathematics is a science that arose due to the practical needs of man. A market trader, laying out goods on the counter in pairs, sometimes had an apple, bread or an ax left over. But Pythagoras began studying the properties of even and odd numbers. When he added two even numbers, he got an even number; when he added two odd numbers, he also got an even number. When adding even and odd numbers, you get an odd number. At first Pythagoras failed to explain this. But then he came up with a unique way of proving general statements about numbers: he began to denote numbers with dots.

The pictures turned out to be of two types - the first had a middle point, the numbers began to be called odd; the second ones did not have such a point (odd). And Pythagoras depicted the products of numbers in the form of rectangles, proving that the product of an even and an odd number is even; odd numbers – odd; even numbers – even, based on the existence of the midpoint of the product. And then Pythagoras complicated his figures from dots. I started building triangles from numbers:

this produced the numbers 1, 3, 6, 10, 15,... These numbers were called triangular.

While studying numbers, Pythagoras took up the divisors of numbers. So, he announced the numbers 2, 3, 5, 7 linear(prime), these numbers are divisible only by one and themselves.

Flat numbers - 6,10..., they can be represented as a product of only two factors.

Corporeal numbers - 8, 12,..., these numbers were represented as the product of three factors.

Pythagoras really wanted to get a perfect number, for this he added all the divisors of the number except the number itself. Pythagoras considered a number perfect if the sum of the divisors was equal to the number; if the sum of the divisors was less than the number, he considered the number insufficient; if the sum of the divisors is greater than the number, it is redundant.

The first beautiful perfect number that the mathematicians of Ancient Greece knew about was the number "6". In sixth place at the invited feast lay the most respected, most honored guest. Biblical legends claim that the world was created in six days, because there is no more perfect number among perfect numbers than “6”, since it is the first among them.

Pythagoras found the first perfect number 6, because its divisors are 1,2,3 and

6 = 1+ 2 + 3.

5.NUMBERS - SYMBOLS,

How numbers acquired names and what superstitions they are associated with are the main sections of this paragraph.

Initially, primitive people were given names only by “ONE” and “TWO”. And everything that came next was “A LOT.” Later, the number “3” appears, which replaced the concept “MUCH”. Some proverbs and sayings indicate this:

Pythagoras gave a special place to five, considering it the happiest of all numbers. The ancients considered the number “five” to be a symbol of risk and attributed to it unpredictability, energy and independence. Numerical correctness: 5 is a prime number; 5 fingers - quinary number system; 5-pointed star; 5 senses (vision, hearing, smell, touch, balance).

In Egyptian and Babylonian philosophy and astronomy, seven was considered the sum of two “life” numbers: three and four. Three persons -

father, mother, child form the basis of life; and four is the number of cardinal points and wind directions from which rain comes, the life-giving moisture of which makes the earth fruitful. Since ancient times, the number 7 has had different symbolic meanings. Thus, the ancient Greeks annually chose the 7 best actors (comic and tragic), the ancient Romans revered the seven sages. Christianity speaks of seven sins and seven sacraments. For Muslims, the place of “highest enlightenment” is considered to be the seventh heaven, where supposedly everyone pleasing to Allah goes.

The number 12, “the dozen,” was highly revered. 12 months a year, 12 signs of the Zodiac, 12 divisions on watch dials, sets for 12 people. The number 12 closed the light, so it was considered a symbol of completeness, wealth, and a lucky number. The number 12 has its own divisors 2, 3, 4, 6, which gave great advantages at a low level of calculations in ancient times.

But with the number 13 there were nothing but troubles. It is simple and is divisible only by itself and one. Superstitions associated with the number 13 turned out to be the most stable and most widespread. Studying the material on the history of the development of numbers, it is already noticeable that humanity has always been interested in the influence of numbers on life.

In the modern world, the science of numerology arose.
